Chartres: A Modern Twist on Stained Glass

A Unique Ceiling Lamp by André Teoman

Chartres, a stunning ceiling lamp designed by André Teoman, takes inspiration from the technique used in antique stained glass motifs of cathedrals. With its modern visual approach and absence of religious motifs, Chartres brings a fresh perspective to this traditional art form.

Inspired by his love for circus, theater, and movies, Teoman aims to tell a story through each of his designs. Chartres is no exception, with its funny and ironic representations of the circle of life on earth, divided into six chapters. This unique lamp creates a magical environment in any space it occupies, while its six different glass colors recreate the emotional aspect of visual senses.

Handmade with care, Chartres features six stained glass slices and a circle, attached to a dark oak wood structure with brass details. This meticulous craftsmanship not only ensures the lamp's quality but also supports the sustainability of Northern Portuguese craftsmen, who have been affected by the economic crisis.

Chartres measures 1650mm x 1650mm x 260mm and weighs approximately 40kg (88.18lbs). Its adaptability in distance to the ceiling and inclination to the floor allows for easy customization of the light direction, making it suitable for various interior projects. The version with a dimmer provides control over the percentage of light, adding versatility to its functionality.

Teoman embarked on the Chartres project in May of this year, during the early stages of his solo career. He studied the art of stained glass with local craftsmen, aiming to create a modern and visually appealing product design. After extensive technical studies and mesmerizing experiences with the stained glass effect, Chartres came to life.

Combining the traditional stained glass technique with a modern visual approach was a challenge for Teoman. Breaking away from the religious motifs typically associated with this technique, he focused on creating a visual history of mankind instead. Constant communication with the craftsmen allowed him to understand the constraints and possibilities, turning the impossible into possible.

Chartres has received recognition for its exceptional design. In 2015, it was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in the Lighting Products and Fixtures category. This prestigious award honors well-designed, practical, and innovative creations that meet professional and industrial requirements. Chartres stands out for its integration of industry best practices, competent technical characteristics, and its ability to provide fulfillment and positive feelings, contributing to a better world.

Chartres is not just a ceiling lamp; it is a piece of art that brings a new emotional aspect to your home. With its captivating storytelling and stunning craftsmanship, it is sure to be a conversation starter and a focal point in any space.
